Classes Offered by NAMI Rochester

NAMI volunteers offer a variety of classes and educational programs throughout the year. The current listing of classes open to the public are listed below.

Spring 2008 Classes

FAMILY TO FAMILY:

This is a free 12 week course for family and friends of individuals with severe brain disorders (mental illness). The course is taught by trained NAMI family members. All instruction and materials are free for class participants.

This course provides information, insight, empathy and empowerment. It includes:

  • Factual information about the different mental illnesses
  • Brain biology of mental illness…
  • Medications
  • Emotional reactions of families to mental illness
  • The needs of families in critical periods of mental illness
  • Developing empathy in order to understand our mentally ill relatives
  • Problem solving and communication skills workshops
  • Assisting families in self care
  • Acquiring strategies for handling crises and relapse
  • Guidance on gaining access to services in the community
  • Information on advocacy initiatives to improve and expand services

WHEN: Thursday evenings. March 6 - May 22nd, 2008.

TIME: 6:30- 9:00 P.M.

WHERE: Rochester Psychiatric Center, REHAB BUILDING (where New Directions Social Club meets during the day),
1111 Elmwood Ave., Rochester, 14620 (map)

COST: Free of charge to family caregivers. You do not need to be a member of NAMI to take "Family to Family."
