All classes are taught by Trained NAMI facilitators.

Changing with the Times: The Emerging role of Mental Health Workers and Professionals

This is a provider education course taught by a team of five NAMI members. The team consists of: 2 consumers, 2 family members and a mental health professional who is either a consumer or a family member. The course is 10 sessions (30 hrs.) and was designed and written by Joyce Burland, Ph.D., National Training Director and a family member, clinical psychologist, and author of the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program. Five of the sessions are based on Family-to-Family and five new sessions were written specifically for providers of mental health services. As with all NAMI courses, it is updated regularly to contain the latest medical /scientific information.

Parents and Teachers as Allies

This is a course for parents and teachers taught by a team of four NAMI members. The team consists of: 1 educator/family member, 1 Family-to-Family facilitator, 1 parent, and 1 consumer. The presentation was designed as a 2-hour inservice and follows a booklet - Parents and Teachers as Allies: Recognizing Early-onset Mental Illness in Children and Adolescents, written by Joyce Burland, Ph.D.

PEER FACILITATED COURSES ON RECOVERY

Classes on Recovery and Relapse Prevention taught by people in recovery are offered periodically throughout the year. Courses include:

  • Sharing Our Recovery
  • Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP)
  • Taking Charge
  • In Our Own Voice (facilitated by NAMI NYS)
